Week Six: February 9-13

This week we finished our unit on caterpillars and butterflies, as well as our book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This this book as our main resource, this week we familiarized ourselves with food from the book, some of which we’d read about in Handa’s Surprise, and some of which were new to us. This week’s Star of the Week was Porsche, and our class enjoyed seeing pictures of Porsche’s weekend with Ted the teddy bear. Here are some highlights for the week:

Week 5, February 2-6

This week we began a new learning cycle about animals and in particular, the life cycle of a caterpillar to a butterfly. Our book for the next two weeks is, The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, which also gave us an opportunity to review the numbers 1-10.

This week was also Science Week at ASCOT, and our class participated by learning about night/dark, day/night and by making rockets for the science lab.

This week's star of the week was Porsche, who was selected for always being friendly, and for being a diligent worker during table time. Congratulations, Porsche!

Here are some highlights for the week:

  • Our class helped to make funky water bottles for our investigation station. We used glitter, bells, pasta, pipe cleaners and food coloring. The boys loved making and shaking their own bottle.

  • We made and experimented with goop (cornstarch and water) using kitchen utensils and our hands. We are learning that it is okay to get messy at school as long as we are exploring and having fun.

  • Our class went on our second nature walk to look for leaves. We practiced cutting leaves to make a cocoon, like the one in The Hungry Caterpillar

Week 4, January 26-30

We had a great week at school as we continued to work on our Around the World & Food Unit. This week we concentrated on food and our senses-what different foods feel, smell, and taste like. Here are some highlights for the week:
  • Using finger paint, we made pineapples. This was our class' first time getting messy with paint, and the kids loved it.

  • On Thursday and Friday, our class spent the day with Ms. Sarah's nursery class. The kids really enjoyed exploring a new classroom and socializing more with other students at school. We also played with our brand new water tray!
